It has been a while since I have written a blog post. I must admit I'm very new to the 'blogging scene' and writing for me has never been a strong point, but in saying that I have decided to give blogging a go. I'm writing about my own experiences as a clinical nutritionist, food as medicine principles, the importance of 'doing s**t that makes you happy', and provide you with an evidence based approach to nutritional medicine and why it is so important.
I thought I would tell you a little bit about me!
I grew up in Melbourne and am still a coffee and food snob at heart. Food and a good coffee ( with coconut milk) literally pulls me out of bed every morning. I moved to Byron Bay about 5 years ago because I have a strong desire to be living with nature at my doorstep. Being able to watch the sunrise, sunset and a full moon rise all in one week ignites something within my soul that sometimes I cannot communicate. You nature lovers will understand! This is all part of my message "DO SHIT THAT MAKES YOU HAPPY". I'm a huge believer that our mental health effects our psychical health and that's why I can't stress this message enough. I always focus on the "YOU CAN HAVE" with my patients instead of the "you CAN'T have". I have seen every healthcare practitioner, healer, spiritual guru in the business and was tired of being told what I can't have so that is why its the focus of all my consultations. I'm not vegetarian or vegan, I have tried both of these diet choices for many different reasons. I have found for myself an omnivore diet suits my nutritional needs. I do not eat a lot of red meat, and I'm terrible at cooking most meat, but I do regularly consume bone broth and collagen. Food is a huge part of my life and when I'm eating out at an amazing restaurant or cafe I can't say no to pulled pork in Mexican dishes or thinly sliced beef in Vietnamese pho. However I am very mindful of these food groups and the impact they have on the environment and choose when and where I eat these animal products.
I am intolerant to corn, dairy milk (can tolerate cheese, phew) and egg whites. I have one Coeliac gene and therefore my body responds well to a gluten free diet, but I never stick to this as I love sourdough and croissants. I love having a glass of red wine with my husband or with my girls. I love to party and have fun and without being able to let my hair down every now and then I wouldn't be who I am today. Im a huge believer in finding BALANCE (in all aspects of life).
I have struggled with gut conditions ever since I was born due to high amounts of antibiotic use as a baby. I am very in tune with my gut and how it responds to what I eat and my emotional state. In my early 20's I gained a lot of weight due to hormonal changes, suffered from adult acne (still combating this), suffered from severe anxiety, IBS (Irritable bowel syndrome) and female reproductive issues (Polycystic ovaries). All of these conditions have taught me the emotional side and my degree has taught me the biochemical / physiological side to these specific conditions. This is why I have a strong desire to work as a nutritionist because I have helped myself.
There is this saying that is floating around the social media world "Your vibe attracts your tribe" as much as I don't like that saying I totally believe in surrounding yourself with people who lift you up, give you encouragement, ignite your soul, make you laugh and when you leave them you say "F**k that was amazing and I love them to pieces" and then you are on your phone arranging the next hang date. Those types of people I keep close to my heart.
I want to take the no BS approach to nutrition because there is so much misleading information out there that has also been written by people who have not completed degrees or diplomas. When I was studying I never wanted to open up my own business and consult with patients but as I was in my final year we had to complete clinical training and see real patients. This is when my love for nutrition developed! Being able to change peoples lives by providing them with the tools to heal and manage their health conditions was a feeling i'll never forget. Putting into practice all those years of theory was the pinnacle of my degree and that was when Kaptured Nutrition was born.
If I write about a supplement, recipe or product it's because I have personally tried it and have seen results or believe that the nutritional information or ingredients list is up to my standard, which are extremely high. Nutritional Medicine excites me because when you break down every process in the human body to it's simplest form it will require a nutrient or a number of nutrients to carry out a function or specific task.
I love my work and being able to make a difference to someone’s life fills my heart with pure happiness. Nutrition is constantly changing therefore I am constantly studying and keeping up to date with evidence based nutritional medicine. Hopefully this blog gives you some insight into how I practice as a Nutritionist and some insight to myself. I love hearing from you so if there is anything I can help with please reach out.
